PSHE

At St Luke’s, Personal, Social, Health and Economic (PSHE) education is a central part of our curriculum and underpins our commitment to developing the whole child. Our PSHE provision supports pupils’ personal development, wellbeing and character, enabling them to become confident, resilient and respectful individuals who are well prepared for the opportunities, responsibilities and experiences of later life.

Our PSHE curriculum is delivered through the Unifrog PSHE programme, which is fully aligned with the PSHE Association framework and meets the statutory requirements for Relationships, Sex and Health Education (RSHE). The curriculum is carefully sequenced and progressive, ensuring that pupils build knowledge, skills and understanding over time in a way that is age-appropriate and responsive to their needs.

As a Catholic school within the Archdiocese of Liverpool, our RSHE provision is enriched through Journey in Love, which forms an integral part of our curriculum offer. Journey in Love supports pupils in developing a secure sense of identity, self-worth and emotional wellbeing, rooted in the belief that every person is unique and created in the image and likeness of God. This programme promotes respectful relationships, moral responsibility and an understanding of family life, in line with Catholic teaching, while also supporting pupils to engage positively with the wider world.

Through PSHE and RSHE, pupils are taught the knowledge and skills they need to:

  • maintain positive mental health and emotional wellbeing
  • build and sustain healthy, respectful relationships
  • keep themselves safe, including understanding risk, consent and online safety
  • show respect for others, celebrating diversity and promoting equality
  • develop resilience, independence and informed decision-making

Teaching takes place in a safe, inclusive and supportive environment, where pupils feel confident to share ideas, ask questions and express their views. High expectations for behaviour and respect ensure that sensitive topics are handled appropriately and with care.

Our PSHE and RSHE curriculum makes a strong contribution to safeguarding, supporting pupils to recognise unsafe situations, understand how to seek help and know who to talk to if they have concerns. It also plays a key role in preparing pupils for life in modern Britain, promoting British values such as mutual respect, tolerance, democracy and the rule of law.

We recognise parents and carers as key partners in their children’s education and are committed to working closely with families to support pupils’ personal development and wellbeing.
